This week marks our final week to prepare for the FSA Writing assessment coming on March 6th. As you might expect, we will invest a lot of time and energy this week into our final practice and preparation.
At this point, students have written multiple essays over the past month. Some of our major goals have been: improving the effectiveness of our text annotation, ramping up the complexity of our essay's organizational structure, using more sophisticated transition devices and techniques, and embracing all of our opportunities for creativity in both the introduction and conclusion. Many students are also still working on adding in more text evidence and/or more elaborative ideas throughout their body paragraphs. In addition to continuing to apply previous learning, our final goals to address this week include pacing throughout the test period, editing, and presenting our best writing self to our scorers (an intentional focus on neatness and legibility). While our reading goals will definitely have to take a backseat during our final lap in essay test prep work this week, they cannot be wholly neglected. This week marks the end of February. All Achieve 3000 goals are due by midnight of Wednesday, 2/28. I've been THRILLED to see the increase of average activity scores this month. I'm proud to say our readers are making the most of these opportunities to practice their reading strategies. Next week, on Friday, March 9th, all independent reading goals for this nine weeks are due. At that time, students should have read and logged 18 chapter books (cumulative total for the year) and completed 3 reading responses for this nine weeks. Today and everyday, please support your child in maintaining a strong reading life at home. As always, be sure you're checking your child's red folder and planner throughout each week. We've sent home some important notices recently regarding spring picture day (3/9/18), yearbook ads and orders, and please keep your eyes peeled for a special invitation this week! PS: Writers, last week you told me your research on plastic bags shocked you and made you reconsider using plastic bags. I stumbled across this European organization this weekend, and thought I'd share their site with you. Check it out! Find inspiration in the actions of others. Discover your own passions. You are never too young to start making a difference! :)
