The FSA Writing test is behind us, and spring break is in the air as we wrap up the 3rd nine weeks! It's hard to believe we're only a month away from the FSA Reading assessment, and in just under 3 months, we'll be celebrating the conclusion of our year together. Wow!
This week, as readers wrap up the loose ends for this grading period, we will take a few days for a micro-research project. Inspired by the Book of the Month Her Right Foot, by David Eggers, students will dive into a study of the Statue of Liberty as an American icon and immigration in U.S. history, with an emphasis on Ellis Island. In this study, we will emphasize and strengthen our note-taking skills and habits, and focus on developing strong personal ideas about the topics we research. At the conclusion of our research cycle, we will reflect on all we've learned and imagine the report we might one day write, sketching an outline with a sophisticated text structure. Then, writers will take the time to craft a passionate conclusion for the report we've imagined. As a final note, all responses and books logged for the 3rd nine weeks were due last Thursday. Readers should have completed at least 18 chapter books (or approved nonfiction books) by this time. I am still accepting responses and updated logs up until this Thursday afternoon. Please support your reader in their at-home reading routines so that they are staying on pace to complete a book every week and a half, or two books every three weeks.
