We have an exciting week of learning ahead!
In Reading Workshop, we will tap into our knowledge of nonfiction texts as a genre as we notice the shifts in texts as we move up in difficulty of our texts. We will focus on how the best readers approach nonfiction text, expecting from the start to focus on main ideas and their supports, text structure, and considering how parts of the text fit together. Just as we learned that readers of narrative texts hold an idea in their mind loosely as they read on, looking for support or realizing they need to revise their thinking, we will practice this same idea with nonfiction texts. In Writing Workshop, after a brief investigation of the literary essay, writers will bring the same keen reader eye they've been growing through their interpretive book clubs to an audio-visual text, "Panyee Football Club". We'll read wide awake, noting the important details and elements of the story, watching themes strengthen throughout the story. Writers will quickly try on a variety of theses, looking for their strongest idea to develop into an essay. In language skills block, we will wrap up our unit of word study and take the quiz on Thursday. Students should be studying their word cards diligently. Remember that the Quizlet tool is there for support! :) On Friday, we will begin a study of dependent clauses, writing them as a part of complex sentences, and properly punctuating those clauses. This grammar study will continue through next week. This week includes two important deadlines of which your students should be aware. By Tuesday, the last day of October, students should have completed a minimum of 8 Achieve articles with a first try score of 75% or higher between 10/1 and 10/31. We've discussed more than once in class that Tuesday night will likely be a busy night, and no one wants to miss the fun, so plan ahead! Friday, 11/3, is our first pacing check for the 2nd nine weeks. By this date, all students should have completed and logged at least 8 chapter books from the beginning of the year to present, and they should have one reading response completed for the 2nd quarter and filed in their binder. As always, thank you for all that you do to support your child! I'm looking forward to a great week of learning! PS: Please enjoy this feel good video we shared in class this week. Gotta love a good story! :)
