Last week was a big week with a grand finale on Friday -- we concluded our novel study books, Old Wolf and War Horse! These books will surely join the ranks of some of our all-time favorite stories, and we will carry them with us as readers as we push through to the end of our shared read aloud, Pax, over the next two weeks.
To celebrate our love of these books -- and the brilliant ideas we've grown together -- we will take time this week to write a literary essay, sharing with the world one of our strongest interpretive ideas from this book study. This will be a fast cycle essay; we will complete these essays on Thursday, prior to our field trip on Friday. And in this, our final week before our ELA FSA, we will wrap up our final days of reading skills reviews. As we revisit point of view and how it shapes the content and style of a text, listening comprehension skills, and comparing and contrasting overall text structures, we will learn about Cesar Chavez and the great fires of Chicago and Peshtigo. Readers will love these topics of study! On Friday, please don't forget to wear your CCE t-shirt for our Marine Science Center field trip. Also, remember to bring your decorated plastic jug for beach specimen collecting and your spending money for the souvenir shop. This is a favorite field trip for all our fifth graders each year, so be sure to arrive on time! The bus will leave PROMPTLY at 9:10, and we will not return till 3PM. Thank you to all the parents who have already signed up for FSA snacks and treats donations! Please remember to send the supplies in as soon as possible so Mrs. Phillips and I can prepare them and gather any remaining needs prior to next Monday morning. Also, stay tuned for information coming soon about our Arts Extravaganza basket! It's going to be a great week!
